This technical report investigates strategies for reducing energy consumption in wired networks using OSPF routing simulations. By testing three different scenarios—ranging from a baseline of all routers active to "smart sleeping" techniques that divert traffic—the study identifies that while power usage can be reduced by 0.32% by idling inactive nodes, poorly selected node sleeping can actually increase consumption by 28% due to inefficient routing.
